Fond memories: Watching Joe play baseball, playing field hockey, spending the night at Jan's, going to dances with Joe, getting grounded by the Gravettes when I came home too late one night (yes of course with Joe)- the parties in the woods where the directions were "find Brownie's car" - coming back for a senior year in high school where my classmates from kindergarten were all still here!!! What a year that was -fun running track with Roxanne, living with the Gravettes and becoming friends with Jeanne and Mr. and Mrs. G. Fun driving up to Weaverville in a pickup truck with four girls in the cab: Eva, Christie, Marla and I singing Beatles songs at the top of our lungs. Fun being in the play, and working on the newspaper. Fun laughing with Jan (over ANYTHING - we made an art form of silliness). Listening to Olivia Newton John "Have you never been mellow" on the lunchroom jukebox. Fun going "into town" and always seeing someone you knew. Rich memories of a Shangrila-like town where people were genuine and you could be yourself.

After that I worked at a Real Estate office as office Manager for 2 1/2 years then went on to a very interesting position of a Collection Manager at a Hard Money Lending & Investment Company which eventually went Bankrupt and the President of the Company went to Prison for Embezzlement. Then I worked for a Small Cellular Company called Cal-North Cellular for 6 years in Eureka, CA then Moved to Savannah, GA to find out about Small Loan Management. I worked for a Money Tree of Georgia for 6 months and moved on to a much better company in the same type of business. I started working for Security Finance of Spartanburg, SC in Savannah GA 3 years ago and worked my way up. I was transferred to Reno, NV 2 years ago to be closer to my family. Douglas City School then back to Weaverville Elem. with all of you. 4th grade and going steady with Mark McClintock (even though I was so shy I don't think I ever said a word to him, I remember that red Christopher necklace he gave me). I remember the slumber parties too. Remember lipstick and painting the faces of those who fell asleep before the rest of us. I am surprised at how many of us remember Varney's Confectionary and those after school stops for big nickle hunks of Milk Chocolate, the cherry, lemon and my favorite chocolate Cokes. I remember roller skating with Leslie Smith when we lived in town a few blocks from them for a short time. Cindy Heffington and I had a secret hide-a-way...remember. I remember riding around town in Dan Cobb's red Ford Galaxy and learning how to drive with him with Woodstock & the Carpenters playing on the tape deck. The Lake in the Summer the parties oh... the parties. Cases of Beer in Dan's trunk. The Trinity Theater (Old Elvis Presley Movies) and how when you left the theater in the dark how the lights of the street made all the cars look a different color than they really were.

Where I live: In Anchorage, Alaska since 1986 - moving back south in about 5-10 years, we still have bills to pay so until then...(great place to live and raise kids but I will need to live closer to my boys and family, where ever that may be - western states though)
|
Career
Path: Graphic artist, then homemaker
through my kids younger school years, then started
graphics and web design business - still fantasize
about being a dinosaur digger (honestly, but
tick tock), cross country ski coach at high school
- still satisfies my "kid" fix
|
Hobbies: Backpacking, biking, cross country skiing, running, traveling, gardening, needlework when I find the time, motorcycling (okay Don, so my motorcycle isn't as big as yours but it satisfies my need for mother-speed, Suzi, however, is going full throttle on hers - yahoo!)
|
Cool
things you have done: Had kids,
backpacked/bicycled
parks in lower 48, roller bladed downtown NY
and DC, bicycle trips with my "boys" to Europe and US, pedaled along the Tour De
France to watch Lance win in 2004, running with
the bulls in Pamplona, Spain (I couldn't do it
but my 3 boys did - girls running with bulls
is frowned upon - I wouldn't have had the courage
any hoot, don't have enough testosterone in me), chased
bears out of my garden several times - no, that
was STUPID, been to our state fair to listen
to Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Guess Who,
Grand Funk Railroad, Three
Dog Night, and
several other bands of the 70's that are older
than me - barely! (guess you get the idea of
the "flavor" of our state fair entertainment!)...they're
baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack...
|
Places
you have lived: Chico, Kings Beach,
Tahoe City, Bettles and Fairbanks Alaska, Irvine,
Anchorage - would love to retire back in Weavie
but don't know yet. My husband still calls it "Weaverstick" but
he came from a place we call "Squarebanks" so
look who's talking - silliness aside, he really
likes Weavie. It
was a great place to live. I envy those of you
that live in Trinity County! Truely. |
Fond
memories: I agree with
Cindy's memory of eating the best potato salad
in town, chocolate cokes and horehound candy
after school - at Varney's - while reading
Richie Rich comic books and wondering what
it would be like to be dripping in money, hanging
out 4th of July, dunk tank, dime toss, selling
ice cream on Friday's at WES, destruction derby,
girl scout trips with great friends, trips
to Redding to cruise the main drag - why?,
friday nights at the theater, kindergarten
nap time - I wonder where that blanket went
- how about that rocking "boat",
writing to Davey of the Monkees more than once
- how come he didn't write back? I thought
I was old enough for him, 1910 and the Fruit
Gum Company, folding the back page of the MAD
magazine to reveal the surprise picture, basting
in butter at the Weavie pool and Trinity Lake,
senior play, field hockey, sound of crickets
on warm evenings, the milky way, taking my
driving test and learning that going 78 in
a 55 mph zone was risk taking (Mr. Olmstead
was nice about it but probably had his brake
petal to the metal), football and basketball
games - 99 bottles of beer on the wall during
those long bus trips (that got old once we
hit #98), white knuckels in Mark's car (not
that his driving wasn't good, just a small
tippy car?), trips to the graveyard - late
night fright nights, slumber parties, many
girl scout trips and activities, making homecoming
floats at Pat's, Sis's and somewhere on Oregon
Street?, hanging with really good people thru
my whole childhood, going through 3 graduations.
I thought all towns
had 3 graduations. My husband says that the
reason there was a kindergarten, 8th grade,
and 12th grade graduation in Weavie is that
the locals wanted all of us to have at least one graduation
under our belts. Funny funny. (serioiusly,
he really likes Weavie) |
Future
Goals: Get over the idea that my "boys" don't
live with us anymore (I have to admit, the empty
nest isn't so bad - dinner, what dinner?) still
travel with them, stay healthy, wake up one morning
without feeling another tweek in my body somewhere,
draw more, learn more about how other people
around the world tick, appreciating the small
things, figure out how I can get a memory like
Gail's, keep in better touch with "old" friends,
stop and smell the roses more often, leave this
world a better place than how we found it ... |
Favorite teacher at Trinity: Mr. Kennedy (HS), Mr Forero, Mr. Olmstead, Mr. Rowen, Mr. Ohde
|
15 minutes of fame: Not of any significance...oh, wait! Swam in Butch Patrick's pool in LA (remember Eddie Munster?), oh yea, I was on romper room with Shannon?? when we were youngin's (or was that a dream Shannon?) - again my memory fades me
|
Secret
crush during High School: Yes,
plenty - but I can't remember all their names
(so many you know)- and I wouldn't have known
what to do with them once I caught one - honestly
- I was so naive!
|
If I knew then what I know now: Wouldn't be so concerned about what others thought, that high school wasn't the end of all the fun, asked more questions in class, be more outgoing and not so shy - but then again, that is part of building a personality later in life - still learning how to do it, oh - and thank my mom more! |
Anything else? Yes, wouldn't miss the reunion - missed our 20th. Thanks Gail for all your help in getting the reunion put together. |

Where I live: Trinity County |
Career Path: Career Path Student. People who love school become professors so they can be in a learning environment forever. I went off to Chico State with Patty, Jan, Cindy A., Renie, Lane, Cindy V. and that began my love of campus life. I love the learning; and the places like the library, the laboratories, the theatres; and the opportunities like listening to others speak, act, and share. We had fun in college. Jenni and Suzi joined us weekends. Chris and Roger came for Pioneer Week. My picture albums tell great stories. I will never forget Jan and I both learned variations in the value of clean from our roommates. Jan and Cindy A. had a long running standoff about whose turn it was to do the dishes and the dishes that grew fuzz were removed to their deck. When I told Patty I thought I was doing all the cleaning she plainly let me know I thought things were dirty at least 24 hours before she did and if I could just wait, it would work out fine. It did. Yes, I love learning and what I learned from my friends is most memorable! I love school. I was a typical girl who does school work, gets grades, and feels rewarded. Then I went onto graduate school at Kansas State and began to teach. I continued typical behavior by giving my first class session a 50 minute lesson in 5-15 minutes. It was also then I decided to try anything once like jump from an airplane, rappel, visit the Jello Museum and some other stuff I found I was much too nervous to enjoy as lifelong hobbies. I believe I had a horse riding instructor once who said, “I have never had a student who was so nervous and was still trying.” That is me. My studies reflect my persistence. I study and test well. I do wish I could ride a horse with such skill. Suzi, help me! After working in the conservation laboratory at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, I taught at Chico State (15 years), jumped off the academic life boat and worked in manufacturing plants as a product developer and quality control specialist, returned to academic life for administrative/management positions at University of Texas at El Paso and Cal Poly Pomona. After receiving a call from a couple of people in Trinity County, I applied for a UC position stationed in the county and accepting that position brought me home. I am delighted to live here. This past year, I have been a volunteer for the Trinity County Historical Society and other county-based non-profits. Today, it feels like a great time to be here. My parents are still active at home and in the community, and it is wonderful to be close enough to see them and my other family members often. I love Trinity County. It is a very special place.
|
Hobbies: Okay, Valorie, someone you and the rest of our classmate do not know called me Martha Stewart today. So there is no need to describe the home crafts I enjoy. I really, really like swimming the Trinity’s cold water. I would like to say I bowl, but I’m still working my way through the video 267 Bowling Mistakes You Can Correct. Save me, Ivy Rochette! Also, I am a partner in Readings Creek Tree Farm. I set chokers for my Dad who, at 92, drives the cat. I buck logs, split wood with a gas powered splitter and do other forest activities my aunties still frown upon.
|
Cool things you have done: I have worked in China, Indonesia, Mexico, and India. How my view of the world changed after these experiences! I worked in villages classified as the fourth world. My desire for material goods dropped dramatically. I can eat bok choy and white rice for weeks on end. Today I know more about global manufacturing than any government official or student with dreams wants to know. Until manufacturers uses processes that keep our water and workers safe, we pay personally rather than at the retail counter.
My lifetime goal is to see the Trinity Alps. I love that place. I find great peace there. My memories there are those of a wonderful life and include fun, happiness, rigorous walking, exhausting adventures, greedy and taunting bears, skunks and cougars walking away from me, cows running toward my tent like in a game of Chicken and the food always tastes great in the Alps. It doesn’t matter what food it is does it?
|
Places you have lived: Trinity County, Chico, Kansas, San Francisco, LA, El Paso |
Fond memories: I got to ride the bus to kindergarten for something like three blocks. Neato! I loved kindergarten and still enjoy the people I made friends with there. You all are still so cute in so many ways!! Remember the singing, the blankets, the blunt end scissors, finger painting and puffs of smoke above your tepee! Do you still smile the same as you did in your kindergarten picture?
I joined Brownies in 2nd grade and stayed in Scouts for over twenty years. Marcene and Bev helped us build great memories. Remember monkey swings, dime a dip dinners, floating bark candle boats in East Weaver (didn’t work), camping in the rain at Patrick’s Point (dreamt I was floating down the Trinity in a bag), five mile hikes and snipe hunts, earning fewer badges than the other troops because we spent too much time camping and hiking, mother Jane P. having the most incredible car backing up skills, mother Lucille V. driving well when girls in the back seat are screaming about stink bugs, singing the songs in the musical Hair, and pigs in a blanket (I just told P. Hicks last month that my recipe she published in her What’s Cookin’ column for Pigs in a Snowstorm {wieners rolled in molasses and popcorn} really didn’t work and was an expression of my dislike for burnt raw Bisquick around a weiner). And the trips to Disneyland, Huntington Library, Universal Studios, Shasta College, Chico and Sacramento! Do you still decorate your friends with toothpaste?I spent 4th grade reading books and still enjoy the story in the special book I was given for reading how many books that year? I loved multiplication and doing other people’s math so they didn’t have to stay-after and we could play together. Mark and John P. had walkie-talkies in 4th grade. That was cool and Lane and I chatted with them from our neat fort we named Lail. Where is John P.? Remember Charlie, Ivan and Chris’ first day of school? Wow, cool new kids. During elementary school, I spent summer mornings at the library and afternoons at the pool, of course, I rushed home with cousin Renata to watch Dark Shadows and eat Rocky Road ice cream drenched in milk.Remember when in the upper grades we put on dances at the Parish Hall? Brownie’s incredible light shows! Were those lights off of cop cars? Remember when we discovered hyperventilating and who was it who got a black nose from landing on theirs? We practiced that and other fine activities at the slumber parties at Shannon’s, Lane’s, Kim’s and Jodie’s. Did Mrs. P. and Mrs. H. ever teach me not to squeal when I was excited? Luckily, Mrs. P. did succeed in getting me to drop “no” as an immediate response to the unfamiliar. In eighth grade, some of us were ‘arrested’ for disturbing the peace. We were singing while sitting on the bandstand. Our singing warranted a walk to the jailhouse, and for our immediate release did we agree never to sing in public again? My childhood also includes great memories of catechism and the Confectionary. Life was good because of Sister Celine the Human Bean, potato salad and a Trinity Moonbeam with a wig!It was in high school I earned the name Bunny. Thank you Chris and Roger for showing your admiration of my dress with the little rabbit print. Okay, so the dress had a pocketed apron with a carrot in it! Jenni, Jan and I sewed our own clothes. Dig the yearbook pics! I enjoyed high school and I’m glad I had friends in all the groups, you remember the jocks, we didn’t have nerds did we (?) just cool people like Pat H. and Kathy G. and Chuck J. and Lane V., the band, the hippies, the girlie girls (aka the cruisers), the newcomers, the friends since kindergarten. When we were in high school, Becky N. and Valerie J. taught me a few things about making friends. Even with what I discovered from them, I learned much later and in very hard ways that not everyone is a friend and that it takes time and work to be a good friend.
As a freshman, Senior Kathy H. was memorable! Her family was among those who moved from So Cal for a better life and to get away from the drugs!!!! Kathy was traumatized the first week of school that she had had to order her clothes from a JC Penney catalog. Wow, I thought, you can order clothes from a catalog? Kathy was so cool. |
Future Goals: To live the poem:
To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest citizens and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give of one’s self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived…this is to have succeeded. |
Favorite teacher at Trinity: Mr. Ohde because he had Eric, Lane, Charlie, Berry, Roger, Mark, me and others who daily pushed our chemistry class beyond limits (were they social or academic limits?). I think we were chatty, laughing pests so Mr. O had us begin class by sitting down in a manner that represented the orbitals for an element. Charlie made great crystals! I read the Noble Gases by Isaac Asimov and I still remember the feeling of incredible curiosity. Mr. Ohde discouraged girls from enrolling in his physics class so he could use intensifiers. So I learned my gender had societal constraints (this was particularly useful knowledge when I worked respectfully in the Southern US and in Moslem countries), and I learned what intensifiers were and their appropriateness.

15 minutes of fame: Wow, mine is probably less than 10 seconds. I was invited by the US Labor Secretary to talk on C-Span about childhood quality of life in overseas manufacturing plants, and when I emphasized avoiding chemical dumping rather than keeping children from working the camera moved away from me.

If I knew then what I know now: I wouldn't have thought Fred and Lucille were so naive!!!! But, seriously, I'm not sure I would have changed too much. I wouldn't have changed my college experience. I learned to dislike the the hectic pace of the corporate world very quickly and if I would have set my education goals any higher I don't think my small town roots would have allowed me to stay there. If I would have done other things in my career, I wouldn't have met and married by husband that I enjoy being married to so much!! So I am thankful for my experiences in life so far!!! |

Fond memories: My first distinct memory was Mark ? driving me up Oregon Mountain just after I moved to Douglas City, and having me look at the view, and him driving away, leaving there alone. (he said he did this to all the new flatlanders). I was not happy...(other Memories) Football games, basketball games and being a stat girl too, learning to water ski with Cindy V....Partying down by the river, dumping all the beer out the windows of the car as we were being chased by Sheriffs...living where it snowed and then cursing it when our pipes froze or burst...burning wood for heat (Not a flatlanders way!) (who really did this...where's the thermostat???) learning to drive and getting my license with Lane Varneys green corvair! Having a massive, long-lasting crush on Eric O....(what was I thinking???) Snow days when school ended early. Harold our bus driver from Steel Bridge. Hanging with Marlin, Mark R., Pat H. and Billy S.. Working at Trinity Hospital for some $, and discovering my lifes calling. Turning 16 with Lisa S. THS Dances (at the CD hall) with Carrol J. and Lester V. M. crashing them ALL the time!!! Melissa S. being so cool all the time (getting shoes like her and killing my feet for years just to be like her in some small way...) Wanting to be Kim L. too...(obviously I needed to find myself...happened much later thank God.) Jay S. teaching me to totally fake 'current event' reports for Mr. Turnbulls class. (That guy seemed so honest!!!) Watching Gail G. be so successful at ANYTHING she did. She really was the next Martha Stewart, folks. Graduation, one of the most fun days of my life! Thank you! The picture of Kim, Lane, Cindy and I on that day is a cherished one.
|
Future goals: Staying married for another 19 years (at least) and watching all my children grow up. They are the best and most important things I have ever done. I tell my daughter all the time about my High School and my experiences there. Memories of HS are fond and deep, but there is a whole lot of life yet to be lived. But you NEVER forget those crazy wonderful times. I guess thats why there are reunions!
|

|
15 minutes of fame: People ALWAYS remember me as theMom of SEVEN kids.
|
Secret crush during High School: I already told you... Eric O., but I don't think I kept that secret well. I also crushed on Donnie B. for 20 minutes one year.
|
If I knew then what I know now: Why wisdom has to come from experience and just plain living (it takes so much time!)...by the time you know the 'good stuff', and want to pass it on to your teenager, so she doesn't take the same rocky trip, she wants to learn it all on her own anyway, just the way you did. I wished I had realized that there really was a great BIG world out there AFTER THS. I wouldn't have been so afraid of everything then. I have learned to be brave and hopefully genuine, something I was not at THS.
|
Anything else? May be coming to the reunion. |
